Rising after Sund, the hill climbs up through rocky outcrops and a gravel road that lead up a steep slope. As one walks up, the soft smell of flowers becomes sharp, cold mountain air with a minty tinge.
A lone house is perched on top of a short cliff overlooking the valley of Martens below. It’s made of wood and stone, and has a makeshift quality to it, as if it was made up of sections of different buildings badly stitched together. To the side of it, there’s a hidden, enclosed garden area, so unkempt that it contains but dead vegetation.
The gravel road stops right under the house, and slowly blends into a path that continues into thickening woods. The rumble of the now distant Whispercreek is superseded by the creaking of tall pine trees and the chirps and whistles of birds. Narrow pathways connect small clearings that are crawling with greener plants and herbs.
